Method: No physical Indian servers since 2022 (CERT-In); serves India via a virtual location (hardware abroad), which affects server location, not usability. Regional caveats: J&K imposed a UT-wide 2-month VPN ban from Dec 29, 2025, and we could not confirm whether it was extended past its late-February 2026 expiry; Manipur rolling suspensions remain. On Vodafone Idea (AS55410) the nordvpn.com website is blocked, but the same block hits other VPN vendor sites and is website-level only. NordVPN was not among the VPN apps delisted from Indian app stores in the Jan 2025 MHA enforcement.

What we're seeing

OONI measurements through August 11, 2026 show nordvpn.com clean on India's major ISPs: 216 of 221 OK on Jio, 203 of 204 on Airtel and 14 of 14 on BSNL. The one exception is Vodafone Idea, which blocks the website (1 OK against 11 anomalies since June 8); a control showed the same block hits ExpressVPN's site, so it is a Vi-wide website policy, not tunnel interference. Regulatory movement in 2026 (the April MeitY advisory) pressures VPN providers to block banned betting platforms, and does not block VPN services. No fresh in-country user report was reachable this pass, which is why confidence stays low.

Sify AS9583 (0/7) and Tata Tele AS17762 (0/10) show a similar pattern at low volume. 3.

Common questions

Is using a VPN legal in India?

Yes. VPN use is legal. The 2022 CERT-In rules require providers to keep customer records, which is why most major VPNs removed their physical Indian servers. Jammu and Kashmir has imposed regional VPN bans since December 2025.

Do I need obfuscation in India?

No. Standard protocols connect normally on Jio, Airtel, ACT, and BSNL as of July 2026. India blocks specific websites, not VPN tunnels.

Why do VPNs show virtual Indian servers?

Because of the 2022 CERT-In data rules, most providers moved their Indian IPs to servers hosted abroad. That affects where your Indian IP physically lives, not whether the VPN works from inside India.
