Given Egypt's DPI blocking of standard OpenVPN/L2TP/PPTP since ~2017 and the Jan 2026 Discord-ban blocking wave on WE and Vodafone, users should assume Camouflage (obfuscated OpenVPN) or NoBorders mode may be required. Historical reports (2023-2024) show WireGuard handshake failures and heavy disconnects on Egyptian ISPs.

What we're seeing

OONI recorded one confirmed block of surfshark.com in Egypt on May 19, 2026, plus anomalies on April 10 and July 13, against roughly 140 clean measurements. Reddit reports from January 2023 through April 2024 describe WireGuard handshake failures and disconnects on Egyptian ISPs, but nothing is newer than 30 days. Status stays unverified.
