The situation in Egypt
Egypt blocks unevenly: OONI shows the websites of PIA, PureVPN, and NordVPN blocked on Telecom Egypt (WE) while astrill.com and windscribe.com stay fully reachable. Under the surface, Egypt has DPI-filtered plain OpenVPN since about 2017 and WireGuard handshakes since about 2021, so obfuscation is the expected requirement for most providers. Fresh tunnel-level evidence is scarce, which is why half this column is honestly unverified. What we do know: during the January 2026 Discord block on WE and Vodafone, Proton reported sign-ups 320 percent above baseline, so VPNs were working for a lot of Egyptians that week.
