The situation in Indonesia
Indonesia is the lightest touch in our set: censorship runs through Trust Positif DNS blocking of websites, not interference with VPN tunnels, and the only direct action ever taken (August 2024) hit three free VPN apps while explicitly sparing paid services. OONI shows every measured vendor site reachable, and the climate is loosening: Reddit was unblocked in July 2026 after 11 years. When Telegram was blocked in June 2026, Indonesian media documented mass VPN downloads to get around it. Seven of ten VPNs here are verified working; the remaining three are unverified only because nobody has published fresh Indonesia-specific evidence.
