What we're seeing

OONI shows the PIA site reachable with zero anomalies and zero confirmed blocks on all 27 tested Indonesian networks from May 1 to July 22, 2026, including Telkom/IndiHome, Telkomsel, Indosat, and XL. The archive contains zero in-country connectivity complaints (everything is about streaming geo-location, a different issue). Low confidence only because nobody has published a direct in-country tunnel test.

Common questions

Is using a VPN legal in Indonesia?

Yes. No law bans VPN use. The government has only floated permit rules for providers and once urged people to uninstall free VPN apps during the 2019 social media restrictions.

Do I need obfuscation in Indonesia?

No. Indonesia blocks websites at the DNS level (Trust Positif), not VPN tunnels. Standard protocols connect normally on the major ISPs as of July 2026.

Why do people in Indonesia use VPNs?

To reach sites on the Trust Positif blocklist, which included Reddit until July 2026 (unblocked after 11 years) and briefly Telegram in June 2026. Any working VPN does the job; see the table for current statuses.
