Does Astrill work in Turkey?
As of Aug 1, 2026, we have not yet verified whether Astrill works in Turkey.

- Method
- Still no verified config and no observed one. Astrill is absent from the BTK 27-service block list and has no EngelliWeb decision on record. The vendor now sells Istanbul and Ankara servers (it listed Istanbul and Denizli at the last pass) and names StealthVPN as its Turkey recommendation. Turkish ISP DPI is real and current, and Turkish forum snippets say UDP-based tunnels break intermittently while HTTPS-shaped ones survive, so StealthVPN is the setting a Turkish user would have to try. That is inference from how Turkey treats other providers, not an observation of Astrill.
What we're seeing
OONI has never recorded a measurement of astrill.com from a Turkish probe across a 19-month window. That is an absence of testing rather than an absence of blocking: over the same period nordvpn.com drew 1,151 Turkish measurements with 383 anomalies, so Turkish probe coverage is healthy. No ekşi sözlük topic for Astrill exists and Turkish VPN threads never name it, which fits a product with almost no Turkish user base. The freshest Reddit mention is April 2024 and is a recommendation, not a test.
Sources for the above:
- forum (Aug 1, 2026): Snippet-observed only (technopat direct fetch 403, as did donanimhaber and eksisozluk). Thread title "Hicbir VPN calismiyor" with sibling Superonline threads; snippets describe Turk Telekom blacklisting servers of widely-used VPN services and UDP-based VPNs being blocked intermittently, with HTTPS-shaped protocols suggested instead. No date visible in the snippet and no mention of Astrill anywhere in it. Country-level background that supports the StealthVPN inference, not Astrill evidence. - disagreements: Direct conflict, and it should not be averaged. Affiliate review sites surfaced by every search (safetydetectives, top10vpn, wizcase, vpnmentor, all snippet-observed and all undated) state flatly that Astrill is the single best VPN for Turkey, one scoring it 9.4/10 as the top provider "among those not blocked," and claim StealthVPN "regularly evades detection by the Turkish government's firewalls." Not one of them shows a test date, an ISP, or a method. Per policy these carry near-zero weight and are recorded here only as the conflicting side. They conflict with the strongest thing this pass actually found, which is silence: no ekşi sözlük topic for Astrill exists, technopat's VPN recommendation threads name ExpressVPN, Proton, Mullvad, Kaspersky and others but never Astrill, and Reddit's freshest Turkey mention is 27 months old. A product that genuinely dominated Turkish censorship circumvention would leave Turkish-language traces, and there are none. That silence is not evidence of blocking either. It most likely means Astrill is a China-focused product almost nobody in Turkey buys, which is exactly why nobody can tell us whether it works. Research trail: Reddit checked as r/Turkey (pullpush, subreddit-scoped, one hit from 2021), r/AstrillVPN (search-engine site-sco
- user_report (Aug 1, 2026): OONI community measurement query, fetched directly. Returned measurement_count 0 for the whole 19-month window: zero TR probe measurements of astrill.com ever. Retried with domain=www.astrill.com, also zero. Used domain= not input= per the 2026-07-22 query pitfall, so this is a real coverage gap (astrill.com is not in the TR test list), not a query error. No evidence either way on the vendor site, and none at all on the tunnel.
- user_report (Aug 1, 2026): OONI community measurement, fetched directly, run as the control for the row above. 767 ok / 383 anomaly / 0 confirmed / 1 failure across TR probes since June 1, 2026. Proves TR probe coverage is healthy and current and that VPN-vendor interference in Turkey is measurable right now, which is what makes astrill.com's zero an absence of testing rather than an absence of blocking. Says nothing about Astrill specifically.
- reddit (Aug 1, 2026): Reddit via pullpush API; direct reddit.com and old.reddit.com both refused from this environment. Freshest Astrill-plus-Turkey comment is r/VPNsAdvice, April 2024, "Have you tried Astrill or Windscribe (free)? They're usually pretty reliable in Turkey" - a recommendation, not an in-country test. The rest are 2013-2021 or point the wrong direction (r/XboxSeriesX 2023 and r/blackdesertonline 2019 are users outside Turkey connecting TO an Astrill Turkey server for store pricing and game latency, which says nothing about connecting FROM Turkey). Background only, all far past 30 days.
- vendor (Aug 1, 2026): Vendor page, fetched directly. Claims Istanbul and Ankara servers and recommends StealthVPN for Turkey as "designed to bypass deep packet inspection," while conceding "the government occasionally restricts access to certain VPN services." Entirely undated marketing copy with no status statement. Astrill's /support page was also fetched and carries no status page, outage notice, or Turkey advisory. One weak source; cannot support "working" on its own.
Common questions
Is using a VPN legal in Turkey?
Yes. Using a VPN is not a crime in Turkey. The regulator BTK blocks access to many VPN providers instead, including 17 services in December 2023, so getting a VPN is harder than using one.
Do I need obfuscation to connect in Turkey?
For most providers, yes. As of July 2026, all 9 VPNs we verified in Turkey are only partially working, and each needs its obfuscated mode or a manual protocol to connect reliably on Turkish ISPs. Check the method notes on each status.
Should I set up a VPN before arriving in Turkey?
Yes. Many vendor websites are blocked by BTK, so download the app and finish signup before you arrive. App stores generally still carry the major apps.
